How is soap made?
When a fatty acid (oil) combines with alkali (lye), soap and glycerin are the result.
Is this like the "lye" soap that my grandmother used to make?
Well, not quite. The basic process is the same as what was known as "lye" soap, but handmade soap made today uses precise measures of ingredients known for the qualities they impart to the soap resulting in a far superior bar than Grandma used to make or soap that is commercially manufactured.
How is handcrafted soap different from commercially manufactured?
Most commercially manufactured soaps are made from tallow, which is made from the rendering of animal fat. Tallow is used because it is extremely inexpensive and plentiful. To cut their materials costs even more, commercial manufacturers remove the glycerin formed in the soap-making process and sell it as a byproduct to other industries. Many commercial "soaps" are actually detergent bars in that they are based on synthetic detergents instead of all natural ingredients.
Why should I use handmade soap?
Because you care about your skin and what goes on your body. Handmade soap is made using oils known for the qualities that they lend to the finished soap and the naturally occurring glycerin, which adds richness and moisture-giving qualities to the soap.
Why is CC Basics soap so special?
We have chosen a quality blend of only vegetable oils in our recipe. Coconut oil is used for a fluffy lather, palm oil to make the bar harder and longer lasting, and pure olive oil for its moisturizing qualities. Glycerin is present naturally, and lends an emollient that dramatically boosts lather while producing a milder soap that is gentler to the skin.
How do you color and scent your soap?
Our soaps are scented with pure essential oils which have been steam-distilled from herbs and flowers, and fragrance infused oils. Natural botanicals may be added for color and texture. We do not use artificial colorants.
How long will a bar of handcrafted soap last?
We design our soaps to be long lasting. They will last as long as a commercial soap bar, and longer than some brands. We do recommend that you use a soap dish to keep your soap dry between uses.
How do you assure the quality of your soap?
Our name and reputation are part of our product. We carefully handcraft each bar, watching the quality from starting materials to finished product. Our soaps are aged for a full five weeks (sometimes longer) before we consider them ready to sell and use. This enables our soap to be extremely long-lasting yet mild. If you should have a problem with our hand-crafted soap, we are here. We are not a huge corporation. We are a small business that is proud of our soap and happy to please our customers.
